The Algorithm is Obsessed with Me - 2022

As a 25-year-old Design & Technology graduate, I never thought that I’d have to enforce digital boundaries between myself and the technology that consumes me on a daily basis. Ultimately, a toxic relationship. Romanticizing my relationship with the algorithm through the “Dear Diary” text below is my own way of drawing parallels between the unhealthy relationship I was having with the algorithm and other human-to-human relationships.

Making this kitchy, barbie-inspired piece is  very much symbolic of the fact that the “perfect love story” and affection I dreamed of having during my twenties was so easily overtaken by the artificial attention I was receiving online. The social-media CEO’s are really out here trying to fill whatever void I have for human connection with perfectly curated content and little heart “like”notifications.

The text in “coded language” in this piece is actual code from the instagram application that tells the app what information to load.  I worked on the initial piece during quarantine in 2021, when my screen time was at an all time high, my social media consumption was through the roof and I was doing very poorly mentally. I worked on the final animation during my 2022 quarantine - after having deleted most social media apps - as I was trying to focus on myself without the noise that comes with all the content I am fed through these channels. This piece commemorates this growth and my willingness to set digital boundaries, as I am actively working against tech giants that try to harvest time & data from my own life.

MICRO SCANDAL

The animated piece was initially showcased at The NFT Exhibition - Art Dubai 2022 until I requested its removal.

From the acceptance of my art work until the end of the exhibition, a significant issue became apparent.
